Tours that take the strain out of enjoying Europe’s flora and fauna! Tours under this banner will be based in a single good quality hotel, and will have direct flights, and these at kind times of day! And most importantly field trips will be kept to a maximum of six or so hours giving you plenty of time to relax before and after. Direct flights are available from some regional airports.

From the beautiful cool green beech forests and limestone karsts of the Gargano’s higher reaches, the hills plunge towards the Adriatic where jumbled white-walled towns cling to the cliff tops. It is an area famous for its diversity of orchids though few visit when some rather special late-flowering orchids bloom. Swarms of Lizard Orchids emerge from a turf dotted with love-in-the-mists, Gladiolus and Scilla montana. The sheer abundance of Pyramidal, Toothed and Four-spotted Orchids is a revelation and amongst these we can find some of the Gargano's most beautiful bee orchids, lovely Ophrys bertolonii, furry Ophrys bremifera and the beautiful yellow-flowered Ophrys lacaitae. Hummingbird Hawkmoths and Ascalaphids enjoy all the finery as do many butterflies including Italian Marbled White, Scarce Swallowtail and Southern White Admiral. Salt pans and coastal lagoons offer great birdwatching too.

Late-flowering Orchids, Butterflies and Birds. Just a little culture too!

Paul Cardy, Stefano Doglio,

Relaxed and easy. Always at a slow pace, ideally suited to photographers. Much the time will be spent in fields and terraces on limestone where the ground may be a little rough.

We’ll spend the week at the Palace Hotel San Michele, over 2,500 feet above sea-level, and with magnificent views south to the Golfo di Manfredonia. This very comfortable hotel has a fine restaurant, orchid-filled terraces in one direction and the lovely old town-centre of Monte Santangelo a short walk in the other! All rooms on this tour have en-suite facilities.
