ANDALUCIA IN AUTUMN
WILDLIFE AT LEISURE
Wildlife Tour to Andalucia with Greentours for Birds, Autumn Flowers, and Molino's wonderful hospitality
Tours that take the strain out of enjoying Europe’s flora and fauna! Tours under this banner will be based in a single good quality hotel, and will have direct flights, and these at kind times of day! And most importantly field trips will be kept to a maximum of six or so hours giving you plenty of time to relax before and after. Direct flights are available from some regional airports.
Peaceful Benaojan, one of the famous ‘white villages’, is perfectly situated amid the tour’s centre-piece, the Biosphere Reserve of the Sierra de Grazalema, and close by picturesque Ronda. Griffon Vultures and Bonelli’s Eagles soar over the Sierras behind the village whilst golden Sternbergia lutea and delicate Leucojum autumnale flower at the base of the cliffs. Large Tortoiseshells will be going to their winter roosts in Spanish Fir forests inhabited by Crested Tits and surprisingly tame Spanish Ibex. Two closely related pheasant’s-eye daffodils have distributions that meet in this area. We’ll see populations of delicate Narcissus miniatus along roadsides even as we rise into the hills from the Mediterranean whereas more widespread Narcissus serotinus decorates meadows to the west of Benaocan. Spanish Psammodromus lizards scurry over limestone knolls where the delicate pink stars of Crocus serotinus shine in the sun. Black Wheatears and Blue Rock Thrushes are numerous whilst Firecrests inhabit cork oak woodlands where we’ll see the very first winter blooms of Narcissus papyraceus. The sea daffodil-related Lapiedra martinezii is one of the more unusual blooms found at this season, another the little Narcissus humilis which gleams butter-yellow from tight limestone turf. We’ll be able to enjoy peaceful and picturesque Ronda at our leisure. Red-billed Chough and Alpine Accentors inhabit cliffs that descend from the town’s spectacular bridge, and where we can see late season butterflies such as Mediterranean Skipper, Southern Marbled Skipper and the very local Zeller’s Skipper. And, most important of all, we’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the fine accommodation and cuisine of the excellent Molino del Santo.
All aspects of the Natural World, and just a little culture.
No more than two or three miles in any one day, and always at a slow pace, ideally suited to photography.
