Botanical & Wildlife Tour to Britain's Atlantic Realm. Flowers, Birds and Landscapes with Greentours
The fresh and breezy hills and mountains of the north and west of Scotland and the wild and beautiful Atlantic Coasts possess almost unique habitats at the northwestern edge of Europe. The outer isles, the Hebrides, will delight us with their flower-filled grasslands known as Machair dotted liberally with lochans of all sizes and shapes. Hebridean Spotted Orchid and Early Marsh Orchid mix with swathes of Ragged Robin, Marsh Marigold and Wild Thyme. Out here on the wild Atlantic fringe are wide sweeping beaches that would be the envy of any tropical isle, and at this season they are as free of midges as they are of people. Otters laze amongst the seaweed and White-tailed Eagles soar over the immense coastal cliffs of Mingulay, an uninhabited island of tremendous beauty. Puffins whirr past our boat as we visit this pristine habitat, dolphins and Basking Sharks are often in the waters here. North of Ullapool we’ll explore perhaps the most striking mountain landscapes in Britain before reaching the Silurian Limestones of Ben More Assynt and Inchnadamph where we’ll find Spring Gentians, Mountain Avens, Moss Campion and Yellow Saxifrage. In the glorious landscapes of the Isle of Skye we’ll enjoy the rich montane flora of the Trotternish Peninsula and the unusual amphiatlantic flora of the lochs near Uig. Ben Lawers is famed amongst British botanists for its rare montane limestone flora. The native Caledonian Pine Forests of Speyside are home to various Wintergreens and Creeping Lady’s Tresses, Red Squirrels, and typical Speyside birds such as Crested Tit, Capercaillie and Crossbills. The high acid plateaux of the Cairngorms and Monadhliath Mountains have Alpine Saxifrage, Globeflower and Roseroot, as well as Dotterel and Ptarmigan.
Flowers and Landscapes. Also Birds.
Mostly relaxed and easy. Usually only three or four miles a day but on a couple of days between five and seven, with some uphill walking! Some of these walks are optionally quite strenuous. So on Ben Lawers, Cairngorm and to a lesser extent in Inchnadamph, those that choce to do so can follow one of the leaders to summital areas and if so will be doing a strenuous walk. There is the option to stay lower and do less strenuous walks on these days.

Moving south we’ll stay on the mainland opposite Skye’s eastern shore at the Tingle Creek Hotel just a few miles from famous Plockton. After a night at the Lochmaddy Hotel on North Uist in the Outer Hebrides we’ve three nights at the wonderful Barra Beach Hotel. This is sure to be a highlight of the tour. The gorgeous rooms look straight out onto the Atlantic with nothing between you and North America (except St Kilda that is!).
