Relaxed Wildlife Holidays/Tours to Dramai GREECE Wild Cats Autumn Colour and Fungi with Greentours

Drama's scenery is as one might imagine rather good! Even... The Nestos and Aggitis Rivers drain deep valleys between the high southern outliers of the Rhodope; Phalakron and Orvilos. The Rhodope is famous for its forests, some of the most unspoilt in Europe. We'll explore Birch, Beech, Spruce and Oak forests of entrancing beauty and which at this season will be a stunning riot of colour.  The extraordinary ancient Sweet Chestnuts above Mikropoli look like they could get up and walk down to the valley below. Wild Cats are found here in good numbers and we've a chance of finding them even in daylight. Hawfinches and Cirl Buntings are common. The forests that straddle the Bulgarian-Greek border and stretch unbroken for a hundred kilometres or more in the higher reaches of Drama  include the virgin tract of Fraktos and spruce and pine dominated Elatia. Snow makes the former inaccessible until summer but now is the perfect time to visit and we'll encounter wonderful displays of fungi on the forest floor with astonishing numbers of a range of Boletes and Amanita species. Indeed throughout our tour we'll have the opportunity to photograph and learn about one of Europe's richest fungi floras. Black, Middle-spotted and White-backed Woodpeckers are the most visible woodpeckers here though virtually all Europe's woodpeckers occur. Brown Bears and Wolves are found in reasonable numbers in these forests though we'll be lucky to find them, but a night walk or two into the oak woodlands above the village of Sidironero will give us a chance. Much more likely though will be sightings of both Pine and Beech Martens as well as Golden Jackal and Porcupine. Golden Orioles and Orphean Warblers are common inhabitants of these forests while raptors will be passing through in some numbers including Levant Sparrowhawk, Lesser Spotted Eagles and Hobbies. Several Colchicums and Crocuses will be in bloom and we'll also find Autumn Ladies Tresses and Sternbergias close to our hotel.

We'll start the tour with four nights at the lovely Aloni Hotel in Volakas perched on the western slopes of Mount Phalakron. Volakas plies its trade in winter as a ski centre but in summer it is all quiet and we'll have the hotel to ourselves. The Aloni is run by Maria and Angelos who will ply us with truly excellent meals throughout or stay as well as delivering picnics to us wherever we are in the field! The rooms are spacious and modern. For the last three nights of the tour we'll stay at the delightful Petrini Gonia, a small family-run hotel in the little hamlet of Livadero just down the valley from the lovely village of Sidironero. All rooms and cabins on this tour have en suite facilities.
