Wildlife of the Andes
Wildlife Holiday Tour in the Andes Peru Birds, Mammals, Amphibians and Archaeology with Greentours
Northern Peru offers that great combination of immense variety of wildlife amidst some fabulous landscapes. Along with the amazing Marvellous Spatuletail and Andean Cock-of-the-rock are a dazzling mixture of poison frogs and butterflies.
There's a fabulous flora with some amazing cacti among the dry forests, immense Puya raimondii, passion flowers and orchids. The Huascaran National Park encompasses a wonderful high Andean Lakeland and protects enchanting bromeliad-laden Polylepis forests. The cloud forests of Abra Patricio have a bewildering assortment of tanagers, the very rare Long-whiskered Owlet, Sword-billed Hummingbird and a very tame Tayra who comes daily for his banana. We've a chance of seeing the Yellow-tailed Woolly Monkey and night walks here are great for a range of mammals and amphibians. Mammals are tame and approachable at Chaparri where Sechuran Fox wanders in and curls up on the floor alongside White-winged Guans and then perhaps a Collared Peccary might amble though the dining room. A big draw here is the chance to see Spectacled Bear though this is not guaranteed. Along the dry Pacific coast are the dense seabird colonies of Punta Eten and inland the easiest viewing of Oilbirds you could hope for. And we won't neglect the rich cultural legacy of Peru. We'll visit the amazingly situated hilltop fortress of Kuelap and the archaeological site at Chan Chan. We'll explore the little-known Maranon Valley and at Gotca Falls we'll enjoy the gorgeous Andean Cock-of-the Rock. Butterflies are spectacular throughout the trip and we'll wake at more than one of the lodges to find the walls and windows covered in an unbelievable variety of moths! Peru is a wildlife wonderland all the better enjoyed with a delicious cuisine and those strong pisco sours!
