Botanical Holidays/Tours to CALIFORNIA with Greentours
The western United States is well-known for its stunning landscapes, these often on a grand scale, and Northern California is certainly no exception. With magnificent forests and the snowy Cascades Range for a backdrop we'll enjoy a marvellous variety of habitats. From the cathedral-like atmosphere of Coastal Redwood Groves to Sagebrush-covered hillsides, and from serene lakes fringed with spruce to the unspoilt shores of Point Reyes and the Klamath Coast, you'll gain a fascinating insight into the region's varied and distinctive flora and fauna.
Paintbrushes, Penstemons, Phloxes and meadows of blue Camassias provide an arena for a multitude of Irises and kaleidoscopic Calochortuses. Colonies of the carnivorous pitchers of Darlingtonia californica carpet bogs amidst Douglas Firs and with them the beautiful Californian Lady's Slipper Orchid. There are beautiful Fritillarias, the fabulous Calypso Orchid, and a wonder with stunning tubular red flowers, the Hummingbird-pollinated Firecracker Flower. Majestic Bald Eagles soar over lakes where parties of American White Pelicans fish in tight flotillas. Cedar Waxwings and Townsend's Solitaires inhabit forests along with White-headed, Nuttall's and Lewis' Woodpeckers. Among the Redwoods we'll find the beautiful Varied Thrush while Black-headed Grosbeaks, pretty Lazuli Buntings and the immaculately-plumaged California Quail are denizens of coastal scrub. On the coast we'll see Ospreys, Pacific Loons and Pigeon Guillemots alongside flocks of Surf Scoter. There are plenty of mammals too, ranging from Coyotes and chipmunks, through Tule Elk and Pronghorn Antelope, to giant Northern Elephant Seals and cavorting Californian Sea Lions.

The Point Reyes Seashore Lodge is the perfect base from which to explore the fantastic Point Reyes National Park. Beautifully furnished rooms are contained within a Victorian-style frontage and a castle-like rear that overlooks extensive grounds. A two night stay at the Golden Oaks Inn at Covelo below the Mendocino Pass will provide something of a contrast being pretty basic! Moving north into Del Norte County we'll go back upmarket again at the renowned Requaa Inn, a lovely old wooden hotel overlooking a river. Near Mount Shasta we stay at the McCloud Hotel, a charming old wooden hotel opposite an 'old trains and carriages' centre. The well-furnished rooms have baths and showers and very comfortable beds. All rooms on this holiday have en suite facilities.
