COSTA RICA

THROUGH THE LENS TOURS

Photographic Wildlife Holidays/Tours to COSTA RICA Poison Arrow Frogs Hummingbirds and Toucans with Greentours

Our Through the Lens Tours focus on having the time to take good photographs; so more time in the field at fewer localities, with fewer hotels, and less time spent travelling. Our photography leader Chris Gardner (see his images on wwww.chrisgardnerphotography.com) will guide you and offer expert tuition in the field on subjects such as composition, lighting or camera use, or indeed whatever you’d like to ask them. These are tours that offer great opportunities for experienced photographers and beginners alike to work on macro photography of butterflies, insects and flowers, bird and mammal photography, and plain old magnificent scenery shots!

Costa Rica's stunning landscapes are still largely carpeted in virgin forest and no less than one-quarter of the country is now within national parks or private reserves. This Eden-like natural heritage becomes apparent even on our first day as the fantastically rich fauna and flora announces itself to us, especially the extraordinary number of bird species. There are some 850 in all, nearly 10% of the world total, crammed into a country the size of Holland!

This beautiful country is undoubtedly a feast for the nature photographer. There are abundant butterflies, several species of colourful Poison-arrow Frogs as well as approachable larger animals such as Toucans and Coatis. We’ll concentrate on the macro photography of the often brilliantly-coloured invertebrates, especially butterflies and dragonflies. Our lodges all have feeders bringing a rich variety of bird-life into camera range including lots of iridescent Hummingbirds.

Costa Rica’s greener season is far and away the best time for diversity of the many smaller creatures and the rain that will fall is usually just for a period in the afternoon. We’ll be staying at just five main locations; the mid-altitude forests of Bosque La Paz, Tirimbina’s Caribbean lowland forests which are home to the most extraordinary creatures, fabulous Rancho Naturalista, the highland cloud forests around Savegre, and then a lengthy stay on the fabulous Osa Peninsula home to one of the most wildlife rich forests on Earth. Here we’ll stay at the private Cabo Blanco reserve, owned and run by a professional wildlife photographer. White-necked Puffbird, King Vulture and the fabulous Scarlet Macaw will be amongst our subjects and huge and approachable Basilisks will allow you a close-up before they run off across the water! Another highlight will surely be magical Rancho Naturalista where we’ll find Golden hooded Tanagers, Sunbitterns, Collared Peccaries, all sorts of gaudy flowers and equally gaudy frogs! Here the immaculate Snowcap Hummingbird will be a prize, indeed during the tour we’ll find an incredible array of hummers; Magenta-throated Woodstar, Purple-crowned Fairy and the shimmering jewel that is the Violet-crowned Woodnymph.

Accommodation

Costa Rica is endowed with many superb wildlife lodges and we will stay in some of the best. All our lodges are either in national parks or have private nature reserves attached. We start with two nights at the lovely Bosque de Paz where comfortable rooms have balconies overlooking wonderful forest. Next are two nights at the excellent Tirimbina Lodge in wildlife-filled grounds. Then we have two nights at Rancho Naturalista, quite simply one of Costa Rica’s premier wildlife lodges, both in terms of comfort and the wildlife found within the gardens and surroundings. We move to the highlands of San Gerardo for a three night stay at the excellent Savegre Lodge. Probably the highlight of this tour will be the next four nights at the gorgeous Bosque del Cabo where spacious cabins on the rainforest’s edge have large balconies overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The last night will be spent at the excellent La Cusinga. All accommodation on this tour has en suite facilities.
