Gabon is a remarkable place. It combines the wonders of the Congolese Rainforest with classic African Savannah wildlife and a beautiful largely untouched coastline in a stable and safe country half the size of France. The rural population numbers less than half a million and so there's plenty of room for the unspoilt forests, lakes, lagoons, floodplains, savannahs and even beaches which we'll enjoy from some comfortable lodges.

The greatest diversity of primates in Africa are found in Lope. We'll search for Lowland Gorillas and various colourful Guenon Monkeys, the agile Black Colobus, and the shocking red and blue faced Mandrill which at this season gathers in spectacular groups hundreds strong. Forest Elephants and Forest Buffalo inhabit rainforest which is home to a plethora of strange and often beautiful fauna and flora. Brilliant Gliders and Swallowtails flash through sunlit clearings where at night we can find the curious Potto and noisy Galagos. We'll look for the bizarre Grey-necked Picathartes as well as myriad hornbills, owls, weavers and brilliant sunbirds and kingfishers.

At Loango families of Elephants walk sedately along the shore, Humpback Whales and dolphins carouse offshore, and Chimpanzee troupes move quietly through the forest. Flocks of Rosy Bee-eaters will be nesting and we'll also see Black and Black-headed Bee-eaters. Along channels are Hippos and beautiful Red River Hogs. Out in the Gulf of Guinea the volcanic islands of Sao Tome and Principe offer a relaxing extension amid fabulous scenery, fine beaches and many endemic birds.

Birds, Mammals, Butterflies and Reptiles.

Phil Benstead,

Usually only two or three miles a day or less. The walks to look for Gorillas at Mikongo are variable in length and might be just a mile or two but could be up to eight and are not (usually!) on paths.

Included in the Price

All flights. All transport, meals and accommodation in Gabon and the Gulf of Guinea Islands. Services of your leaders. Please note: drinks, tips, visas, and items of a personal nature including insurance, are not included.

Group Size

The minimum is 5 and the maximum is 9.

All accommodation on the tour and extension has en suite facilities and air-conditioning except the nights at Mikongo where there will be shared facilities. In Loango National Park we'll be at the excellent Loangu Lodge with a night at the Akaka Forest Camp in the middle of our stay. In Libreville we stay at the recently-renovated Tropicana, which is by the beach. Beautifully situated on a bend in the Ogooue River, the Lope Hotel has very comfortable chalets and good food from the French-trained chef. Three nights at Mikongo will be in a specially set-up camp with facilities and camp beds. On Sao Tome we'll stay at the very comfortable Omali Lodge Boutique Hotel and on Principe at the lovely Bom-Bom Island Resort. The latter's fine restaurant and bar are on the tiny islet of Ilheu Bom-Bom which is linked to the mainland and the very fine bungalows by a wooden walkway.

UK return flights are from various UK Airports* via Paris to Libreville. Other indirect routes from regional UK Airports* are available.

*Some routes may incur a supplement.

Hot. We are visiting in the dry season but rain still occurs and it is still quite humid especially on the islands.
